No-Bake Broccoli and Spinach Dog Treats

If you’re looking to sneak some healthy green veggies into your dog’s diet these no-bake broccoli and spinach frozen dog treats are super easy and the addition of green-lipped mussel powder will give your dog some added joint support!

Having a giant breed dog I’m always looking for ways to give them some additional joint support besides their daily joint chews.

Green-lipped mussel powder is my go-to but since it has a distinct fishy flavor I can’t add it to just any treat, it has to be just the right combination of flavors and spinach and broccoli are 2 vegetables that it goes good with and Odin loves all of these ingredients!

I use these no-bake broccoli and spinach dog treats all year round as a topper to Odin’s and Finn’s dinner and they’re super easy to make!

Can Dogs Eat Brocolli?

Yes! Most dogs can eat plain broccoli, steamed or raw!

Broccoli is high in fiber and vitamin C and low in fat making it the perfect snack, meal topper or ingredient in homemade dog treats when given in moderation.

I don’t like broccoli but it’s one of Odin’s favorite snacks so I buy it weekly and use it to mix it into his food every other day and I use it in a lot of frozen treat recipes.

Can Dogs Eat Spinach?

Yes! Just like with broccoli, most dogs can eat raw or cooked spinach in moderation.

Spinach contains large amounts of vitamins A, B, C, and K. It also contains iron, antioxidants, beta-carotene, and roughage.

On the flip side, spinach is very high in oxalic acid. Oxalic acid blocks the body’s ability to absorb calcium and in some rare cases, it can lead to kidney damage. Dogs that have healthy kidneys can process small amounts of soluble oxalates easily, but long-term consumption can cause kidney stress, muscle weakness, abnormal heart rhythms, and even respiratory paralysis in some dogs.

I like spinach in salads but don’t always have it on hand and honestly, my dogs only seem to like it if it’s hidden in some other flavors so I give it occasionally but it’s not a staple in this house.

What Are Green Lipped Mussel?

green lipped mussels

Green-lipped mussel, also known as the New Zealand mussel,  is a shellfish native to New Zealand. that contains several anti-inflammatory compounds claimed to treat inflammatory conditions, including asthma and arthritis.

Green lipped-mussels contain chondroitin sulfate and are found in many dog joint supplements.

These mussels are also said to be a good source of zinc and an excellent source of iron, selenium, and several B-vitamins.

Our regular joint supplements contain green-lipped mussels but anytime I see an opportunity to add in some Snouts Green-Lipped Mussel powder to any of our homemade treats, I do it!
